How this calculator works

By dividing the weight a lamb still needs to gain by its current daily growth rate, we can project exactly how many days it will take to hit the target.

Formula used

Days Needed = (Target Weight - Current Weight) ÷ Average Daily Gain

Example calculation

A 70 lb lamb targeting 100 lbs needs to gain 30 lbs. At an ADG of 0.6 lbs/day, it will take 30 ÷ 0.6 = 50 days.

What to do with this result

Use the target date to book slaughterhouse slots in advance or to time your sales perfectly for holiday markets.

Ready to track this for the whole flock?

One-off calculations are great for quick checks, but farm decisions are better when records are connected. HerdDeck Shepherd connects sheep records, weights, treatments, and feed costs in one easy app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ADG stay constant?

No. As lambs get closer to maturity, their ADG usually slows down as they start laying down fat instead of muscle.

Why do I need a target date?

Booking abattoir space or securing buyers often requires weeks of notice. Estimating the date helps you plan.

What is a typical target weight?

Market lambs are typically finished between 100 and 140 lbs (45 to 63 kg), depending on the breed and market demand.

What happens if they don't reach target weight?

You may need to adjust the ration, check for parasites, or accept a lower sale weight depending on market prices.
