How this calculator works

ADG measures how fast an animal is growing per day. By subtracting the initial weight from the final weight and dividing by the days between, you find the daily average.

Formula used

ADG = (End Weight - Start Weight) ÷ Days

Example calculation

A lamb weighed 40 lbs on May 1st and 55 lbs on May 31st (30 days). Gain is 15 lbs. ADG = 15 ÷ 30 = 0.5 lbs/day.

What to do with this result

Compare the ADG against your target ADG to see if lambs are growing fast enough. If ADG drops, investigate feed quality or parasite loads.

Ready to track this for the whole flock?

One-off calculations are great for quick checks, but farm decisions are better when records are connected. HerdDeck Shepherd connects sheep records, weights, treatments, and feed costs in one easy app.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good ADG for lambs?

A good ADG ranges from 0.4 to 0.8 lbs/day (200-350 g/day), depending on breed, age, and ration.

Why is my ADG so low?

Low ADG can be caused by poor pasture quality, underfeeding, internal parasites, or poor genetics.

How often should I weigh lambs?

Weighing every 2 to 4 weeks gives a clear picture without causing too much stress to the animals.

What does ADG stand for?

Average Daily Gain.

Can ADG be negative?

Yes. If an animal loses weight (due to illness, severe weather, or lack of feed), the ADG will be negative.
